Sources suggest that the existing Parliamentary party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi is likely to be re-elected as the CPP today. Although the 76 year old expressed her desire to discontinue her political journey, she did not contest the 2024 general elections from her bastion Raebareli, the party’s unanimous view is that Sonia should continue as the chairperson of the Parliamentary Party.
Congress’s new Leader of Party
Previously, the LoP from Congress was Adhir Rajan Chowdhary. But his recent loss in the elections to TMC’s Yousuf Pathan has casted shadow on his leadership abilities, compelling the party to look for a replacement.
Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, Congress has won 99 seats in the Lok Sabha 2024 elections and emerged as the second largest party in the Lower House after BJP that won 240 seats alone, compared to only 52 seats won in 2019 elections. His party members credit him for his two “Bharat Jodo” yatras in the country. By winning both seats from Waynad and Raebareli, he has gained the confidence of his party members as well.
“For the Congress’ leader in the Lok Sabha, we all feel Rahul Gandhi should be given charge. If he accepts this role, he will be LoP leading the 234 INDIA bloc MPs,” said Congress leader Manickam tagore. Seconding the proposal, another Congress MP, Dean Kuriakose, has demanded Rahul Gandhi’s appointment as the Parliamentary Party Leader. “We have a good number now. We will form a good opposition. We will fight against BJP. There is a mandate against BJP, it is very true,” the MP added.

‘TDP and JDU(U)- NDA’s crutches,’ accuses Congress

Meanwhile, the Congress has accused BJP’s NDA to be reliant on TDP and JD(U) for support in the Lok Sabha. His speech at the National Democratic Alliance meeting drived the Congress leaders to take a swipe at him for referring to NDA multiple times in his speech unlike his usual tendency to only acknowledge BJP.
“Sahib [apparent reference to Modi] took the name of NDA more times in his one-and-half-hour speech than he did in the last 10 years,” Congress leader Pawan Khera said at a press conference. “You and I understand that the full form of NDA is the Nitish/Naidu Dependent Alliance.”
