The night of May 25 will forever be etched in former US President Trump’s mind when he addressed a crowd of Libertarians at the National Convention. In a rare occasion of humiliation from the crowd, Donald Trump found himself in a tough position as he struggled to make his speech.
His 35 minute long speech was marred by hecklers, irking Trump as he grappled to stick to the pre-written speech and avoid making controversial remarks to the pieces of insults and mocks thrown at him. Being a staunch Republican, the Libertarian Party members strongly suspected his efforts to secure the party’s support.
“He’s going to make himself sound Libertarian,” a Libertarian said. “But he’s the ultimate authoritarian.”
Trump has been building his base at the Liberty party for months with help of Richard Grenell. Richard is former acting director of national intelligence and has played a key role in trying to build his support among some Libertarian activists and donors.
What went wrong with his speech ?
The Republican candidate started off his speech with a blatant suggestion to nominate him as their candidate for President, triggering booes from the crowd. Exasperated by the reaction, Mr. Trump refused to take a step back and went on to insult the hosting party.
“Only do that if you want to win,” he said of nominating him. “If you want to lose, don’t do that. Keep getting your three percent every four years.”
For someone like Donald Trump who nearly certainly has narcissistic personality disorder, being booed is going to completely consume his soul for days.

The crowd at the convention comprised not only the Libertarians who were skeptical of the Republican candidate but also his supporters inside the party wearing red MAGA hats, all seated in the front row. At every insult and mock from the dissenting crowd, the supporters seated at the front cheered, “We Want Trump.” This orchestrated display of Trump support apparently toned down the intensity of resentment present in the seated crowd making it more ugly.
Catering to the Libertarian Party’s belief in limited government and unhinged individual liberties, the ex-US President called out the government bureaucracy and regulation. He promised that, if elected, he would put Libertarians in his cabinet and in senior positions, eliciting some of the night’s loudest cheers.
Responding to raised placards with “Free Ross” scribbled on it, he made another promise to commute the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the black-market website Silk Road who was sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
After battling the raucous dissent and discord for nearly 35 minutes, he ended his speech with, “You can either nominate us and put us in the position, or give us your votes,” setting off another chorus of boos.

Disagreement over Trump’s invite
The Libertarian Party delegates were not delighted at Trump’s presence at the convention. They did not appreciate his appearance as it was completely against their wishes. During votes on official party proceedings on Friday, one attendee shouted, “I would like to propose that we go tell him” to get lost, using an expletive.
Few hours before his speech, a dispute over seat reservation between Trump supporters and Libertarian party members broke out. Front seat was fully booked by Trump supporters leaving hardly any room for other attendees.
“I don’t want to fight with people or beg and plead,” Angela McArdle, the party’s chair, told the Trump supporters. “Let’s just make room for the delegates, because those are the people you’re trying to persuade.”
A day ago, on Friday, the independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had addressed the convention before Trump.
