Just one day after being decisively chosen to be the next leader of Pakistan, veteran politician Asif Ali Zardari assumed office on March 10 as the nation’s 14th president. In the Presidential Palace, Aiwan-e-Sadr, Mr. Zardari, 68, took an oath from Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.
Additionally, Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party, was the joint candidate of the ruling alliance of the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. He was fielded by the PTI party and backed by the Sunni Ettehad Council. Zardari, the first civilian president in Pakistan’s history, received 255 votes in the National Assembly and Senate.

He is the widower of Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistani prime minister who was twice elected. He served as a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly in 2018–2023 and again in 2024. However, in the Sindh Assembly, where Zardari’s PPP has the majority, he received 58 votes, and in the Balochistan Assembly, he received all 47 votes cast. With the PML-N forming the government in the Punjab legislature, Zardari received 43 votes and Achakzai received 18.
Achakzai earned 41 votes in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa legislature, where the SIC/PTI is in power, compared to Zardari’s meager 8 votes. The ECP stated, “There were 1,185 seats in the electoral college overall, of which 92 were vacant […].” “The 1,093 voters who were left were to cast ballots.” The electoral commission said that out of 1,044 ballots cast, nine were ruled to be invalid. It stated, “There were 1,035 valid votes cast overall.”

Following, Asif Ali Zardari took an oath, saying, “I, Asif Ali Zardari, do solemnly swear that… I will bear true faith and allegiance to Pakistan, that, as President of Pakistan, I will discharge my duties and perform my functions, honestly. To the best of my ability, faithfully by the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the law, and always in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being, and prosperity of Pakistan, I will strive to preserve the Islamic ideology, which is the basis of Pakistan’s creation, and that I will not allow my interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions”, Zardari made these statements after taking the oath.
