Self-Inflicted Gun-shot wound Kills Student
On February 5th, at NICHES Land Trust – Crow’s Grove in Williamsport, Indiana, the lifeless body of a US student was uncovered in the woods in the evening around 5pm.
The Indian origin student, Sameer Kamath was a doctoral student in mechanical engineering at Purdue University. Apparently, further investigations lead us to believe the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gun shot injury on the head.
The 23 year old, who is the fifth student of Indian heritage to have died recently in the US, extends the list of tragic Indian deaths occurring in America.
Sameer Kamath’s Suicide Sparks Concerns
On Wednesday, at an official press release, the Coroner of the Warren County Coroner’s Office verified the preliminary cause of Kamath’s death to be a ‘gunshot wound of the head’ inferred from the forensic autopsy report conducted on 6th February in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The Coroner, Justic Brummett additionally stated that although the toxicology report is pending, the extensive investigation by the Warren County Coroner’s Office as well as local and federal institutions strongly suggest Kamath died of suicide in Indiana’s nature preserve.
Brummett, saying that the Kamath family was informed of the tragic news prior to press release, went on to convey their ‘deepest sympathies and condolences’. He acknowledged the ‘difficult times’ for the family and wished them privacy.
Indian Students in US at Risk?
Sameer Kamath, who did his Masters in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, is the recent addition to the series of student deaths. There is an alarming string of deaths specifically Indian-origin or Indian students pursuing education in The United States.
A month back. Neel Acharya, a 19-year-old student from Purdue University went missing. Post filing a report, he was found dead on the University’s West Lafayette campus. The autopsy confirms the involvement of no foul play or trauma or any notable injury.
In the same instance, a 25-year old Indian student, last month was hammered to death in Georgia. Vivek Saini, succumbed to the ruthless beating wounds from a homeless drug addict.
Syed Mazahir Ali, a hyderabadi-origin Chicago resident and a masters student in Information Technology, was followed and viciously assaulted by three anonymous men.
Recently, Shreyas Reddy, Linder School of Business student was discovered dead in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Rewinding back to January, Akul Dhawan, 18-year old Indian-American student was found lifeless near the University of Illinois on January 20th.
These series of tragedies, although unrelated, have sparked the attention of authorities. The increasing tally makes the threat of US dreams more palpable.
