Under the anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday designated two factions of the Muslim Conference, Jammu and Kashmir (MCJK), led by Abdul Ghani Bhat and Ghulam Nabi Sumji, respectively, as “unlawful associations.”
“These outfits have been engaging in activities against the sovereignty and integrity of the nation,” stated Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a social media post on platform X. Five years have passed since both factions were outlawed. The two organizations, which are a part of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) founded by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, have not been active for several years.
Following a meeting with the late Dineshwar Sharma, the special envoy of the Indian government, and indicating his willingness to speak with the Center, Prof. Abdul Ghani Bhat, the head of the APHC, was removed from his position as president of the Muslim Conference in 2017. He is viewed as moderate, and there is hardly any presence in the group.
Center Prohibits Two J&K Muslim Conference Factions
Due to their pro-Pakistan and anti-Indian propaganda, the government on Wednesday banned two groups of the Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir for five years and advised their followers not to participate in elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration is committed to eliminating terrorism, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and anyone who engages in illegal activity would suffer severe repercussions.
However, the Union Home Ministry extended the ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu Kashmir (JeI) by five years due to its anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda. The Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir- Sumji faction (MCJK-S), chaired by Ghulam Nabi Sumji, has been involved in supporting terrorist activities and threatening Indian democracy. The MCJK-S has also asked Kashmiris to refrain from participating in elections.
Also, “The government has proclaimed the Muslim Conference Jammu & Kashmir (Sumji faction) and Muslim Conference Jammu & Kashmir (Bhat faction) as Unlawful Associations, striking terror networks with undiminished vehemence.
The center has banned two groups for their anti-Indian activities
In a related action, the government on Tuesday added five years to the ban placed on Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu Kashmir (JeI) for engaging in activities that endanger national security. The Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir-Sumji faction (MCJK-S), led by Ghulam Nabi Sumji, is well-known for its pro-Pakistan and anti-India propaganda.
According to a notification released by the Union Home Ministry on Wednesday, members of this faction have supported terrorist activities and given logistical support to terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir. The MCJK-S leaders and members have been involved in soliciting money for illegal operations, such as funding terrorist activities and persistent stone-pelting on security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir, from a variety of sources, including Pakistan and its proxy groups.
Additionally, the home ministry accuses the MCJK-S of violating Indian democracy by urging Kashmiri citizens to boycott elections, thereby compromising the fundamentals of Indian democracy. The MCJK-S is also involved in anti-national activities, promoting secession from India, and encouraging the use of arms to destabilize law and order.
