Prime Minister Narendra Modi essentially set the groundwork for three semiconductor projects valued at almost Rs 1.25 trillion, the most significant of which is the Rs 91,000 crore Dholera plant, which is expected to start producing chips by 2026.
One of the three facilities is headquartered in Assam, while the other two are in Gujarat.
The three projects are the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon, Assam; the Semiconductor Fabrication facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) in Gujarat; and the OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat.
Modi lauds the job creation after projects’ completion
During the launch, Modi urged Indian youth to participate in a program aimed at making India a leading player in semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technological advancement.
The Modified Scheme, which includes the establishment of a semiconductor fab in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility in Morigaon, is expected to create thousands of jobs within the semiconductor sector and promote employment in related fields like electronics and telecommunications. The initiatives align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of making India a leading player in semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technological advancement.
This is consistent with his goal of making India a center of excellence for the design, development, and manufacture of semiconductors on a global scale, while also increasing job prospects for young people in this field.
Company behind the projects
Tata Electronics Private Limited plans to establish a semiconductor fabrication facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region, marking India’s first commercial semiconductor fab.
The total investment is over ₹91,000 crore, making it India’s first commercial semiconductor fab.
The company also plans to establish an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon and an OSAT facility in Sanand.
These facilities will help India’s semiconductor industry grow and establish a solid foundation, employing thousands of young people and stimulating job creation in related industries like telecom and electronics. PM Modi called the initiative a special day in India’s efforts to become a hub for semiconductors.
