One of the most awaited events of 2024, the SAG Awards sizzled with some of the most brilliant moments of the year. Sprinkled with awe, glamour and applauds, the Award function witnessed an iconic reunion, the host’s hilarious remarks, celebrations, appreciation and a rollercoaster of emotions.
The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on 24th February 2024 at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California.
The function was streaming live on Netflix as the stars of Hollywood gathered under a roof to acclaim 2023’s entertainment masterpieces and performance that won hearts.
The announcement of nominees on 10th Jan and the ongoing SAG-AFTRAa strikes in the industry which stalled production of umpteen projects, stirred a huge buzz before the awards.
The Competing Nominees
The year 2023 saw phenomenal rival releases – Barbie and Oppenheimer. Both the unprecedented flicks were admired and loved globally, continuously locking head with each other and then, astonishingly commencing the trend of Barbenheimer.
Margot Robbie earned nominations for leading actress while Ryan Gosling made the nominee for supporting actor. Barbie was also included in the list for and stunt performers.
Oppenheimer on the other hand, with Cillian Murphy entered the battle for lead actor and Robert Downey Jr. for supporting actor as well as Emily Blunt for supporting actress.
Succession, succeeding the nominations for Golden Globes as well as the Emmys months back, was again shining with five nominations. Preceding Successions lead, The Last of Us, Abbott Elementary, Ted Lasso, and others, have been chosen as potential rivals.
Trophy Holders Smile and Shine
At the LA hosted awards, the winners are voted for by the other actors. Oppenheimer continued making a blast at the event bagging esteemed awards at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Saturday.
Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr won their nominations and Christopher Nolan and coup won the prize for best film cast.
Sir Kenneth Branagh, while representing the entire ensemble of Oppenheimer said that the team is “grateful, humbled and proud”
He mentioned the prevailing SAG-AFTRA protests and paid respect and gratitude to the union’s support, sacrifices and strength which allowed them to become a better individual and a better society.
Since the best picture category was eliminated this year, the best film cast is the most prestigious honour of the AG Awards 2024.
Oscars Winners Predicted?
Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor who essayed the role of Oppenheimer, calls his win “extremely, 
extremely special.’ He got emotive and in his acceptance speech, he recalled his failure as a musician and as a struggling actor. This honour refills him with pride and belonging.
Murphy’s this victory, gives him a thrust, propelling him as a predictable winner for the Oscars, happening on 10th March.
Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon star took home the award for the best leading actress
She recalled the landmark year and highlighted its struggles. She acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of the SAG-AFTRA memebers and felt proud of everyone in the audience. ‘We bring empathy into a world that so needs it.’ she said.
The Holdovers star Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the prize for best supporting actress, an award she keeps winning and has very high chances of taking home the Oscars too.
Category: Television Series
In the television category, the champions were Ali Wong and Steven Yeun for Netflix’s series Beef, and The Last of Us’s star Pedro Pascal.
Also acknowledged were Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White for The Bear, a kitchen comedy as the trophy for the best drama actress was earned by Elizabeth Debicki for portraying Princess Diana in The Crown.
Succession, Season 4, won best ensemble drama cast and The Bear was named best ensemble comedy cast.
The Epic Reunion
An iconic reunion was witnessed and cheered at the ceremony, as Meryl Streep arrived on stage to confer the Best Actor in a Comedy Series award. She told the audience that she forgot her glasses and immediately, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt rushed to bring her spectacles.
This signals the roles of them playing assistants to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) in The Devil Wears Prada. The much adored reunion of the legendary film’s trio became a sensational moment of the ceremony.
Respects were paid to Matthew Perry, Andre Braugher, Harry Belafonte, Sir Michael Gambon, Tina Turner, Angus Cloud, Glenda Jackson, Alan Arkin, Julian Sands, Lance Reddick, Lee Sun-kyun, Tom Wilkinson and Chita Rivera as their contributions were acknowledged and their absence was grieved during the In Memoriam segment.
Elba: The Hot and Humorous Host
Idris Elba won hearts and led the entire ceremony seamlessly sprinkling humor, amusement and charm throughout his hosting. “Personally, I can’t wait to get home, and have Netflix recommend this show to me,” he jokingly remarked since it was the first time the show was streaming on OTT platform.
He also appreciated the the “difficult time” the actors went through during the recent boycotts.
