On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a chat with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, extending warm wishes on Italy’s Liberation Day. He also expressed gratitude for the invitation to the G7 Summit in June. During their conversation, they both affirmed their commitment to further fortify their bilateral strategic alliance. They also exchanged viewpoints on various regional and global happenings that are of mutual interest, as per sources familiar with the call.
The G7 Summit is set to take place in Italy’s Apulia from June 13-15, 2024, right after the Lok Sabha election results are out on June 4. The Group of Seven consists of Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, with the European Union also participating. The EU is represented by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission at the summits.
Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, mentioned on Thursday that India has received an invitation to attend the G7 summit. He stated that while they are aware of the summit being held in Italy, they are currently considering the invitation and will share further details once available.
Italy took over the Presidency of the G7 for the seventh time on January 1, 2024. This Presidency will continue until December 31, 2024, featuring a packed schedule of technical meetings and institutional events across the country.
