Olivia Munn’s Unexpected Diagnosis
Acclaimed actor Olivia Munn, famed for her roles in hit films like “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Ocean’s 8,” has revealed her courageous journey through a recent health battle.
In a heartfelt social media post, the 43-year-old star disclosed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, a diagnosis that came as a shock despite having a normal mammogram and negative genetic test just months before her diagnosis.
In the past ten months she’s had four surgeries including a double mastectomy, bed-rested, educated herself comprehensively on cancer and its treatment. ‘Surprisingly, I’ve only cried twice. I guess I haven’t felt like there was time to cry.” she said.
Munn mentioned that if her doctor hadn’t opted to perform a risk assessment for breast cancer, the aggressive form of breast cancer, luminal B would not have been detected.

The risk assessment prompted her doctor to order an MRI, which led to further tests including an ultrasound and subsequent biopsy, leading to the diagnosis. Just 30 days later, Munn endured a double mastectomy.
Despite the challenging journey, Munn appeared on the Oscars red carpet with her partner John Mulaney, their son Malcolm being born in late 2021.
The Importance of Risk Assessment
Munn’s post serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of breast cancer risk assessment. Encouraging women to inquire about their Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score (BCAS) with their healthcare providers, she credits her own doctor’s proactive approach in the disease’s trajectory.
BCAS evaluates the disposition of an individual developing breast cancer. It considers a range of factors, including personal and family medical history, lifestyle choices, and genetic predisposition.
It classifies individuals into different risk groups, enabling tailored screening and preventive strategies. It also looks into factors like age, reproductive history, hormone usage, alcohol consumption, BMI, and family history of breast cancer.
If the BCAS number is greater than 20%, there arises a need for annual mammograms and breast MRIs starting at the age 30.
By calculating her BCAS and conducting further screenings, Munn’s doctor identified the cancer at an early stage, allowing for prompt intervention.
Throughout her ordeal, Munn expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of her loved ones, particularly her partner, comedian John Mulaney, and their young son, Malcolm. Mulaney’s steadfast presence and meticulous attention to Munn’s medical needs exemplify the strength of their bond during challenging times.
Raising Awareness
In sharing her journey, Munn hopes to raise awareness about breast cancer risk assessment and the importance of early detection. Her Instagram post is an alarm for all women to be conscious of their health and prioritise it.
By sharing her experience with vulnerability and strength, she empowers others to confront health challenges with courage and resilience.
“I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration and support on their own journey,” the actress said in the post accompanied by photos of her in a hospital bed and with her doctors.
