On Wednesday at a checkpoint in Niagara Falls, a car rushing toward a US – Canada Bridge from the American side crashed and exploded, killing two people and forcing the closure of other border crossings for several hours. Authorities stated there were no indications of a terror attack, but they were unclear of what caused the unfortunate incident.
The explosion occurred at the rainbow bridge linking the New York State and Ontario at Niagara Falls.
In a statement released late on Wednesday, the FBI’s Buffalo office declared that its investigation was over. “A search of the scene revealed no explosive materials, and no terrorism nexus was identified,” the statement read. “As a traffic investigation, the matter has been turned over to the Niagara Falls Police Department.”
Concerns were raised on both sides of the border as the United States approached the Thanksgiving break because there was still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the Rainbow Bridge tragedy.
Soon after, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden were notified, Trudeau then asked to leave Question Period in the House of Commons to obtain more information, stating that authorities were “taking this extraordinarily seriously.”
Authorities deny any terrorism involved
A short while later, U.S. Attorney Trini Ross of western New York and Governor Kathy Hochul of New York both made an effort to calm concerns.
“You actually had to look at it and say, ‘Was this generated by A.I.?’ because it was so surreal to see how high in the air this vehicle went and then the crash and explosion and the fire,” Hochul explained. The governor stated that both the driver and the passenger perished. Hochul revealed that a citizen of western New York was one of the victims.
Hochul stated during a press conference that “there is no sign of terrorist activity in this crash based on what we know at this moment.”
“We can move on with our lives,” Erie County Sheriff John Garcia remarked at a different press conference held in close proximity to Ross in Buffalo.
The car raced across a wet road crossing, struck a low median, and leaped high into the air in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection area just east of the main vehicle checkpoint, according to security camera footage made public by the American government. The vehicle twisted as it flew for yards before crashing into a line of booths.
Due to the vehicle’s extensive damage and the debris that was scattered over 13 booths, Hochul informed the journalists that the investigation would take some time.
She stated, “There isn’t a license plate.”
Shortly after Hochul’s press appearance, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas released a statement on X, restating that the incident did not appear to be related to terrorism.
Following the incident at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, I have been in ongoing contact with New York @GovKathyHochul and my federal colleagues and Canadian counterparts. At this time, there is no indication of a threat related to this incident.

Security Beefed up In Niagara Falls
The Buffalo Niagara International Airport announced that it will step up security as events developed, including conducting additional passenger screenings and automobile checks.
The White House claimed as events developed that President Joe Biden was briefed on the explosion.
The Canadian parliament was told by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday afternoon that the event was being investigated by the police.
“This is something we are taking very seriously,” Trudeau declared. “We are following up in an effort to obtain as many responses as we can, as soon as we can. At every border crossing in the nation, additional safeguards are being considered and implemented.”
Located in northern North America on the Niagara River, Niagara Falls is one of the most well-known sights on the continent. The falls are located where New York State, USA, and Ontario, Canada meet. The waterfall served as a draw for vacationers and thrill-seekers for many years. Visitors could enjoy tightrope walking and barrel rolling over the falls. But the site’s attractiveness as a physical phenomenon, its beauty and singularity, has grown in importance.
The view of Niagara Falls State Park is breathtaking! In addition, it offers a family-friendly atmosphere with mouthwatering culinary options, miles of hiking trails, engaging exhibitions, and exciting events.
