Daughter of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, senior PML-N politician Maryam Nawaz filed her candidacy papers on February 25 for the position of chief minister of Pakistan’s politically significant Punjab province. “Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers for Punjab’s Chief Minister have been submitted,” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said on X.
Additionally, she is meeting with the province’s senior bureaucrats and has already received the security typically granted to the Chief Minister. She is seen as the political successor apparent to PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, who unexpectedly selected his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif to be his party’s nominee for prime minister.
Punjab’s new CM, Maryam Nawaz, will be chosen today
The Punjab Assembly and Sindh Assembly will vote on chief ministers, with PMLN’s Maryam Nawaz likely to become the first female chief minister in Pakistan’s history. The Sindh Assembly will elect the new leader of the house, Syed Murad Ali Shah, as the PPP nominee for the top office in the province.
PMLN parliamentary leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif has 225 MPAs in the House, while the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has fielded PTI stalwart Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan, with around 103 MPAs. Nomination papers for both candidates were filed in the Assembly Secretariat on Sunday.
Maryam Nawaz has been chosen to lead Pakistan’s Lahore province as its next chief executive. She was re-elected to the provincial legislature and won two seats in Lahore, PP-159 and NA 119.
