Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh criticised his successor, Narendra Modi, accusing him of diminishing the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office with hateful and inappropriate speeches directed at a particular community.
Manmohan Singh condemned the BJP for targeting this community, suggesting that such actions seemed to be a distinctive tactic of the party.
Manmohan Singh’s comments followed an incident where, during a rally in Rajasthan in April, PM Modi claimed that if the Congress party were to come to power, they would prioritise distributing the country’s wealth to families with more children.
Modi also referenced a past remark by Manmohan Singh, implying that Muslims should have the first claim on the nation’s resources.

In a letter to the people of Punjab ahead of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accused PM Modi of delivering highly divisive hate speeches.
He claimed that Modi had wrongly attributed statements to him, emphasising that he had never singled out any community, a tactic he argued was uniquely employed by the BJP.

Manmohan Singh criticised Modi’s promise to double farmers incomes
Manmohan Singh also criticised Modi’s promise to double farmers incomes by 2022, arguing that the current policies had instead harmed farmers earnings over the past decade.
He highlighted that the national average monthly income for farmers was just Rs 27 per day, while their average debt stood at Rs 27,000.
Manmohan Singh pointed to the high costs of inputs like fuel and fertilisers, the impact of GST on numerous farm related items, and erratic decisions regarding farm exports and imports as factors that had drained farmers savings and marginalised them in society.
In the past decade, the nation’s economy has faced unprecedented turmoil. Policies such as the disastrous demonetisation, a flawed GST, and the mismanagement during the Covid-19 pandemic have left the country in a miserable state, where a GDP growth rate of a subpar 6-7 percent has become the new normal,” said Manmohan Singh.
Manmohan Singh criticised the BJP-led government for its handling of the 2020-21 farmers protests and took aim at PM Modi for his comments about farmers.
Around 750 farmers, many from Punjab, lost their lives while protesting for months at Delhi’s borders. Despite facing police batons and rubber bullets, the Prime Minister insulted our farmers by calling them ‘andolanjeevis’ and ‘parjeevi’ in Parliament,” he stated.
He emphasised that the farmers only demand was the repeal of the three farm laws that were imposed without their consultation. “In the past ten years, the BJP government has done everything possible to denigrate Punjab, Punjabis, and the spirit of Punjabiyat,” Singh added.
