As the BJP led state government in Haryana allegedly loses support of three legislators, the Haryana state government is struggling to maintain stability amidst ongoing general elections.
Former BJP ally, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and Congress have sought either the Saini government’s resignation on ‘moral grounds’ or a floor test. The BJP-JJP alliance that began in October 2019, ended this March.
Recently the Haryana CM, Nayab Singh Saini addressed the media on Thursday and asserted the presence of support within the government, after he was accused of leading a minority government by JJP’s Dushyant Singh Chautala. He imputed the opposition of misleading the public with such false claims.
“We won the trust vote recently and will win it again if asked to prove Majority in the House,” the CM said. Interestingly, the CM had addressed the media along with three other members from the JJP suggesting the possible division in the Opposition’s party.
Currently, the Saini government has the support of 40 MLAs from its own party, two independent MLA and the HLP MLA, taking its total to 43. The three additional MLAs from JJP’s 10 MLAs, seen in the media with Saini have added support to the Saini government making it 46. Thus, attaining an additional vote than a simple majority of 45 in the House.
Who is Dushyant Chautala from JJP?
This 36 year old MP from Uchana is the youngest political leader in Haryana. He is senior party leader from JJP and former Deputy CM of Haryana. With his straight-forward attitude and lack of hesitation, he has set fire in the political landscape of Haryana. Calling the sitting CM Saini “weak”, he seeks the resignation of the current CM on “moral grounds” and the imposition of Presidential rule in the state with the Governor’s permission.

While offering his support to the Congress, the JJP leader added, “It’s upto the leader of the Opposition Hooda to make the move to topple the government” — taking a backseat in the crossfire.
Simultaneously, JJP’s candidate in Hisar and Dushyant’s mother Naina Chautala’s carcade was attacked on Friday evening while on a campaign in Rajkhera village of Uchana. The ruckus started with stone pelting at their vehicles followed by an argument between the JJP supporters and alleged Congress workers who prevented them from entering the village.

Who withdrew support and what next ?
The MLAs — Randhir Golan from Pundri, Dharmpal Gonder from Nilokheri and Sombir Singh Sangwan from Dadri — withdrew their support on Tuesday and declared that they will campaign for the Congress in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Moreover, Gian Chand Gupta, the Vidhan Sabha speaker denied receiving any formal letter of change of support from the 3 MLAs. He added that it’s only a hoax created in the media. But the fact that such a news has been made public, the perception regarding the BJP government in Haryana has suffered a fatalistic impact, insinuating the likelihood of a shift in power from right-wing BJP to left-wing Congress.
A no-confidence motion had been moved in March, by Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, as well which had failed to pass. Another motion can only be made after a 6 month period has passed as per the Constitution.
Haryana is scheduled to poll on May 25 in the fifth phase of the 2024 general elections on all 10 seats in the state.
