Indian Pune-based student, Satyam Surana pursuing law from the London School of Economics has claimed that he was harassed by others during his election as general secretary of LSE.
He has claimed that posters were torn, and slogans written to oppose him in the election. The surprise is not the opposition of Satyam during the elections but the false claims that he was fascist and allegedly a BJP supporter showing hatred and animosity.
The Beginnings
Satyam first came to the news in October last year when he was appreciated by many on Twitter and various other platforms when he picked up an Indian flag from the ground. This flag was destroyed by the Khalistanis during their anti-India rally in the UK. This act of pride and braveness shown by Satyam was showered with appreciation from people all around the world including BJP leaders like Sunil Kamble. He was also felicitated by Devendra Fadnavis who is currently serving as deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.
Timeline
Satyam Surana chose to stand for the LSE elections for the position of General Secretary. The campaign began on the 11th of March. They began campaigning by going around the campus pitching for him as the candidate and posting their poster around their campus.
On 14TH – 15TH march, people on the campus started ripping the posters and crossing their faces on the posters. He later complained to the authorities regarding the matter.
“We replaced all the posters as well. On 15th – 16th there were crosses on my face and things were written like ‘anyone but Satyam’ was written.”
On the 17th of March afternoon, messages were being circulated on LSE Indian and law school groups that he was a BJP supporter, a radical, an islamophobe, and a transphobe. These claims came just hours before the voting began. These kinds of statements and messages were continuously bombarded on the groups. The screenshots of his tweets where he was supporting the BJP and development work in India were also shared to portray Satyam as a BJP stooge. The harassment just kept on increasing with the people going to the extent to message him personally and attack him for the same.
The messages also included fake news about the BJP claiming that the government is bombing parts of India including central India.
He had a team of three who went out to campaign for his election as the general secretary, but he was the only one attacked and harassed. He claimed that this wasn’t just an attack but a well-planned one to harass him for his innocent actions of being proud of his country.
Later, Satyam said that he is very appreciative of the support that he got from his friends and people all over the internet. He still thinks that people should come out and support their nations and feels sad to see Indians targeting him for his support for Bharat.
