In recent weeks, Google has let go of numerous employees.
According to new reports, the company, under the leadership of Sundar Pichai, has terminated its entire Python team – allegedly opting for cheaper labor. The report suggests that Google intends to cut costs by hiring less expensive talent from outside the United States.
According to a post shared on Mastodon by Social.coop, a former member of Google’s Python team expressed deep sadness over the decision, describing it as the “best job” he’d had in his 20-year career.
Another Google employee lamented the difficult situation of witnessing colleagues, including their manager, being let go and then being asked to train their replacements from a different country. This experience led to reflections on the challenges of capitalism and living in the US.
The report indicates that Google is establishing a new team in Munich, Germany, from scratch. The Python team in the US, which reportedly comprised fewer than 10 members, played a significant role in managing Google’s Python ecosystem. Their responsibilities included maintaining a stable Python version, updating numerous third-party packages, and developing a typechecker.

Google’s job cuts in other departments too
Google has implemented job cuts in its real estate and finance departments. The finance teams impacted include Google’s treasury, business services, and revenue cash operations. Ruth Porat, Google’s finance chief, informed staff via email that the restructuring involves expanding operations in Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin.
Furthermore, in January, Google laid off hundreds of employees from various teams, including engineering, hardware, and assistant teams. This move comes as the company focuses on investing and expanding its artificial intelligence offerings.
