Nariman: A Revered Jurist Departs
Noted Rohinton Fali S Nariman, a name well-known in the justice sector as one of the most eminent constitutional jurist. Serving as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court, New Delhi, Nariman departed the world on 21st February, 2024 at the age of 95. He suffered a heart attack.
The renowned lawyer was a figure revered for having a vociferous ideals for civil liberties. His opinions on judicial developments had been appreciated and greatly regarded. Serving for more than seventy years as an esteemed constitutional lawyer, Nariman had an illustrious career involving several historic cases such as the famed NJAC verdict.
The Lawyer’s Rise to Fame
Fali S Nariman’s professional journey began in November 1950 when he took up the job as an advocate of the Bombay High Court. In 1961, his position and status got a promotion as he earned the designation of a senior advocate In 1972, he migrated to New Delhi to set foot in the Supreme Court of India and left his former workplace i.e. The Hight Court of Bombay.
Nariman also boasts of serving as Additional Solicitor General of India during the same time when he travelled from Mumbai to Delhi in May 1972.Following Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister’s decision to impose emergency, Fali renounced his post in June 1975 as a mark of protest.
The veteran barrister has also held the post of the President of the Bar Association of India from 1991 to 2010.
Nariman’s Galore Cases
His immense and impactful contributions to the judicial arena led him to receive the honourable Padma Bhushan in January 1991. He was also bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.
In his significant vocational progression, the attorney is celebrated for speaking against umpteen cases including the NJAC verdict and the SC AoR Association case, that determined the institutionalisation of the collegium system. He expiated on the scope of the rights of minorities under Article 30 while being a member in cases like the TMA Pai case.
He also carried out the role and responsibilities as the President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration from 1994. Nariman served and sustained a lot of esteemed positions like that of the Vice-Chairman of the Internal Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce from 1989 and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva from 1995 to 1997.
Recently, Nariman again spoke up in his bold voice, criticizing against the judgement leading to the abrogation of Article 370.
Nariman remains a strong persona in the judicial sphere.
