Case proceedings
The 17 year and 8 months old minor, initially detained, has recently been granted bail by a Pune court within 15 hours with three conditions – write a 300-word essay on accidents, work with traffic police for 15 days and undergo counseling and treatment for his drinking habit. Given the severity of the accident, with two deaths on spot, such a swift and lenient judgment by the court has sparked widespread outrage on social media.
Anish and Ashwini’s kin expressed their disappointment over the judgment and had urged the court to try him as an adult. The sessions court is mulling over the plea. Upset by the judgment Anish’s uncle Akhilesh called it a murder rather than an accident. “The accused, a minor, was drunk and was driving at 240 km per hour. He did not have a driving license. This is murder, not an accident.”, he said. Vowing to fight for justice, the infuriated family members of Ashwini have demanded investigation into the minor and his parents.
Currently, his father has been detained by the police under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act while waiting for a response from the sessions court.
