Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former external minister Sushma Swaraj has made her debut from the New Delhi Lok Sabha Constituency as she campaigns for her first electoral battle. Being a staunch supporter of Modi, she is determined to achieve the set target of, “abki baar, 400 paar” by Mr. Modi in one of his campaign speeches.
Presently, she has replaced Meenakshi Lekhi, a two time BJP MP from New Delhi. In 2019 general election, Ms. Lekhi won 55% votes polled against her rivals from Congress and AAP, Ajay Maken and Brijesh Goyal respectively. Given her zero experience of political campaigns and outreach and set against AAP leader Somnath Bharati, the benchmark for Ms Swaraj is set pretty high. Yet, as a new player she is determined to accomplish the challenging task of winning a high profile, strategically using her mother’s influence and describing herself as an embodiment of Sushma Swaraj’s sanskaars.
With the New Delhi election scheduled in Phase 6(May 25), Ms Swaraj has set out for her campaigns, in an attempt to win Delhi and its people. From sabzi mandis and chaupals to dhobi ghats and bastis, she addresses small meetings and conducts multiple roadshows across her constituency.
Dissing the jailed CM of Delhi and promoting Modi’s scheme in a speech she said, “There are some very important Modi government schemes which honourable Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwalji does not allow to be implemented in Delhi. For example, the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which gives health coverage of Rs 5 lakh, cannot be implemented in Delhi because he disallows it. The one thing I would like to ensure is that all these Modi administration schemes are implemented.”

Once she qualified as a Barrister, she received a call to the bar from the Hon’ble Inn of Inner Temple, London. Later, she earned her Masters degree from the St. Catherine’s College, University of Oxford.
Before stepping into the field of politics, she made herself distinguished in the field of law, working across all genres of law from real estate to criminal trials. She is also the Additional Advocate General for Haryana. Last year, she was appointed the co-convener of BJP Delhi’s legal cell.
Delhi’s fate ?
While Ms Bansur Swaraj’s mother, the late external minister, had a significant influence, this does not ensure the same amount of influence for Ms Bansuri. However, her campaigns are showcasing her strong will to keep up the ‘Swaraj’ name and establish herself in the field of politics with a significant victory. Currently, the right wing party is eyeing for victory on all seven seats in the NCT Delhi for the third time in a row.
