Optus Outage
Optus, Australia’s second-largest telecommunications operator left millions of people without access to the phone or internet on Wednesday due to an inexplicable statewide outage.
The interruption, which started on Wednesday just after 4 a.m. (17:00 GMT on Tuesday), severely damaged internet and payment systems and interfered with train services throughout morning rush hour in several cities, including Melbourne.
Mobile phones, landlines, and broadband internet have all been impacted, according to the Australian government. In an interview on ABC Radio, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, the CEO of Optus, ruled out a cyber attack but did not provide an explanation for the several-hour disruption.
The team led by CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin stated they were still figuring out what went wrong. “The teams are trying many different angles and we will not rest until the service is back up for our customers”, she claimed to a local radio station via a WhatsApp call.
It seems improbable that the issue originated in the Optus networks’ software because our systems are incredibly reliable. This is an extremely uncommon event, the speaker stated. “We are putting in a lot of effort to have it operational as soon as we can.”
The disruption prevented emergency calls from landlines on the Optus network and prevented phone calls from reaching dozens of hospitals. According to the New South Wales poisons hotline, they have also been impacted.
The company, which has come under fire for failing to notify clients during the outage, said in a later statement that it had begun partially restoring its services.
Optus stated that while some services had started to be restored about six hours after the outage started, it would require some time for the network to be fully operational. The cause of the outage and the estimated time of restoration were not disclosed by Optus, the Australian branch of Singapore Telecommunications’ telecom business.
It also affects other Optus network providers, such as Moose Mobile, Aussie Broadband, Amaysim, and others. According to an Australian Broadcasting Corporation report, a customer of Optus has been unable to obtain crucial updates regarding her father’s cancer treatment due to this incident. Danielle Hopwood stated, “I’m just waiting for results, and I can’t even get those through”, as reported by BBC.com
The telecom has just over 10 million customers, about 40% of Australia’s total population.
Michelle Rowland, Australia’s Minister of Communications, stated that many Australians have been experiencing anxiety this morning and urged the corporation to provide customers with information that are “timely” and honest. “My understanding is that this is a fault deep in the core… so it is a fault that is quite fundamental to the network’ , she stated. The company will provide updates throughout the day, according to Ms. Bayer Rosmarin, who also expressed regret for the disruption.
Optus Cyber Attack Last Year
The company drew international attention last year when, as a result of a cyber attack, it experienced what was thought to be the largest data breach in Australian history.
The second-biggest telecommunications operator in Australia has revealed that it was the target of a cyber attack that exposed confidential customer information effecting 9 million users.
The Sydney-based telecom company stated that it had “shut down” the attack as soon as it was discovered and that no consumers had been harmed. However, it did encourage customers to be “cautiously aware” of any unusual or fraudulent behavior on their accounts.
The company claimed that it had informed the police and the information commissioner of the incident and it was collaborating with Australia’s cyber security center to address any risks to customers. When the assault happened and the potential number of affected clients were not mentioned. According to the firm, the attack did not affect account passwords, voicemails, messages, payment information, or Optus services.
In order to “help safeguard our customers as much as possible,” Bayer Rosmarin stated that it was “engaging with any necessary authorities and organizations” and expressed its “deep regret” for the incident.
