Luis Suárez amazed fans with a hat trick for Inter Miami on Saturday, but the spotlight shifted to Lionel Messi, who stole the show with an incredible performance against the New York Red Bulls.
According to Miami’s head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, Messi’s display was beyond belief, as he set two MLS records.
The Records
Messi became the first player to make five assists in one game and his goal, along with his assists, marked the most significant individual contribution in a single MLS game at Chase Stadium. Martino added that such a performance might never be witnessed again.
In the recent win against New England Revolution, Messi continued to make waves by setting two more MLS records. His streak of scoring and assisting in six consecutive league matches highlights his exceptional form, with a total of 10 goals in eight games, matching Suárez’s tally. Moreover, Messi’s 12 assists this season outshine any other player in the MLS.

The chemistry between Messi and Suárez, honed during their time at Barcelona, has translated seamlessly onto the pitch for Miami, making them a formidable duo once again.
Lionel Miami faced a challenging first half
Miami faced a challenging first half, trailing 1-0 against New York after Dante Vanzeir’s goal in the 30th minute. However, they staged a remarkable comeback after halftime, with substitute Matías Rojas equalising in the 48th minute, courtesy of an assist from Messi.
Lionel Messi then took charge, putting Miami ahead 2-1 before setting up Suárez for three goals and Rojas for another. Despite a late consolation goal by Emil Forsberg in the 97th minute, Miami secured the victory. With this win, Miami maintains its position at the top of the Eastern Conference and gears up for their next match against CF Montreal on May 11th.
