In Puducherry, BJP fields Namassivayam for the Lok Sabha
A. Namassivayam, the Minister of Home and Education, has been nominated by the BJP in Puducherry for the April 19 Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Namassivayam, who represents the Mannadipet Assembly constituency, has familial links to N. Rangasamy, the supremo of the AINRC and chief minister of Puducherry, and he also has significant influence with the Vanniyar base.
Namassivayam is a Civil Engineer from a political family connected to N. Rangasamy, the Chief Minister and founder of AINRC, who has been a prominent figure in the Congress party. He represented the Villianoor segment from 2016 to 2021 and the Oulgaret constituency in 2011. Despite speculation about his appointment as Puducherry Chief Minister, Namassivayam remained steadfast within the Congress ranks. Following the AINRC-BJP alliance’s victory in the 2021 assembly polls, he was appointed as the Home Minister of Puducherry.
Namassivayam has accepted the task of running in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, making his legislative debut, despite his reluctance. His rivals are Tamizhvendhan of the AIADMK and V. Vaithilingam, the current Congress MP. Analysts, however, foresee a crucial struggle that would mainly pit the Congress against the BJP. Namassivayam’s campaign highlights Puducherry’s changing political climate as contenders prepare for a pivotal contest.
