Bhutan’s King honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday with the prestigious Order of the Druk Gyalpo, marking the first time a foreign head of government has received the country’s highest civilian award.

The Order of the Druk Gyalpo is a significant recognition in Bhutan’s honor system, representing a lifetime of remarkable achievements and contributions to society.
Since its establishment, it has been bestowed upon only 4 distinguished individuals – Queen Grandmother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck in 2008, Je Thrizur Tenzin Dendup (the 68th Je Khenpo) in 2008, and Je Khenpo Trulku Ngawang Jigme Choedra in 2018.
2-Day Bhutan Expedition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a heartfelt reception as he embarked on a two-day State visit to the Buddhist Kingdom, reinforcing India’s steadfast commitment to strengthening ties with its Himalayan neighbor under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy.

The warmth of the welcome was palpable as the Bhutanese people lined the entire 45-kilometer route from Paro International Airport to Thimphu, where Indian and Bhutanese flags adorned the streets.
Upon his arrival at Paro airport, PM Modi was greeted with a red-carpet reception and embraced by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, marking the start of a ceremonial welcome.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the significance of the visit, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the Neighbourhood First Policy.
Originally slated for March 21 and 22, the visit had to be rescheduled due to adverse weather conditions there
A Productive Visit to Reinforce Ties
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to meet with both King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, as well as the Prime Minister of Bhutan.
This visit opens the gate for more constructive discussions on bilateral and regional issues, aiming to further strengthen the already exemplary partnership between the two nations.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the unique and enduring bond between India and Bhutan. They share “a unique and enduring partnership, rooted in mutual trust, understanding and goodwill”, the statement said.
“Our shared spiritual heritage and warm people-to-people ties add depth and vibrancy to our exceptional relations,” the MEA stated.
The Prime Minister is set to be warmly greeted at the Tashichho Dzong, a traditional Buddhist monastery that also serves as it’s the administrative center.
On Friday, 22 March 2024, PM Modi will inaugurate the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital in Thimphu, one of the modern medical facility constructed with the support of the Indian government.
The Himalayan Country’s Prime Minister Tobgay recently visited India for 5 days, marking his inaugural foreign trip since taking office in January. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with leaders from diverse industries and participated in other significant events.
Boundary Controversy: Bhutan and China
Amidst growing ties between the two nations, attention is on Bhutan’s boundary talks with China. Disputed areas like Doklam and Sakteng are under scrutiny, with China’s recent claims raising concerns about pressure tactics on the country.
India has paused road construction in response to the neighboring country’s request, indicating the delicate nature of negotiations.
The roadmap for talks gained momentum in 2023, but the new Bhutanese government’s stance is being closely watched. The Ministry of External Affairs has avoided extensive commentary, with recent visits focusing on mutual regional interests.
The joint statement emphasized India’s support for Bhutan’s development, including infrastructure, connectivity, and sectors like agriculture and healthcare.
