Gold-Silver-Bronze laced with Wrought-Iron
The Paris Olympics 2024 have announced an intriguing news, awarding the winners with special medals. The gold, silver and bronze honours will also have a bit of Iron scrape on them, extracted from the Eiffel Tower.
Olympics and Paralympics podium finishers will get the opportunity to take home a part of Paris as a relic. This one-of-its-kind gesture from the City of Lights has attracted a lot of buzz and excitement among the athletes.
The design feature hexagonal tokens embellished with metal shreds that come straight from the iconic Eiffel Tower of Paris.
Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, reveals that this decision is owed to the desire to give the medals and the achievers a cultural value to their win. This symbolic gesture will evince a historical bond between the event and the accomplishment, linking it to the location.
Reboul exclaims proudly that Eiffel tower is the absolute symbol of Paris and France as he unveiled the medals for the event in Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of Paris where several Olympic events will be held. ‘It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them.’ he added.
The laurels also have ridges of sparkling lights on them to honor the moniker Paris holds as the ‘City of Lights’. ’
Sparkling and Empowering Medals Unveiled
The 18 gram medals have the metal adorned in the centre in the shape of hexagon which resembles the map of France. The metals are iron relics preserved from the past renovation projects.. ‘We found out that over the years during the maintenance of the Eiffel Tower that they were obliged to remove some of the original structure,” Reboul explained. The discarded scrapes were safely protected in a discreet warehouse.
The 5,084 awards are crafted by Chaumet, a well-admired, 244-year old jewellery manufacturing organization that drew inspiration from its archives.
The medals are sketched with a beautiful and empowering image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, marching dauntlessly ahead. In the background are Paris’ most iconic landmarks – the Acropolis and the Eiffel Tower on opposite ends.
