Kim Kardashian caused quite a stir with her ensemble at the 2024 Met Gala. While her stunning silver corset dress by Maison Margiela by John Galliano turned heads, it was the addition of a cropped grey cardigan that had people talking on social media.
“Why the grey sweater?” questioned one follower on Kardashian’s Instagram post, echoing the confusion felt by others. Some fans even suggested that she could have skipped the cardigan altogether.
Kim Kardashian reveals the rationale behind her choice of knitwear
Kim Kardashian revealed the rationale behind her choice of knitwear during a red-carpet interview. She explained that her look was inspired by the Met Gala’s theme, ‘The Garden of Time’.
“It’s like the craziest night ever in a garden,” she expressed about her outfit. “I just dashed out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on. Then I had to hurry to get ready. My hair’s a mess.”

Interestingly, the styling choice seen in Kim Kardashian’s outfit mirrored that of the Maison Margiela spring 2024 ‘Artisinal’ couture collection. In that collection, models flaunted corseted ensembles paired with cropped jumpers and cardigans. While Kardashian’s attire was custom-made for her, it seems that Galliano remained faithful to his initial runway vision.
To complete her look, Kim opted for loose, wavy hair dyed an icy blonde for the event.
“The idea was to create a look like she’s been in the garden, her hair tousled and her braid coming undone,” explained Kardashian’s hairstylist, Chris Appleton, to E! News. “That’s why we went for the undone braid. I literally finished it seconds before she stepped out. Her hair was mostly down. I just thought making it too neat wouldn’t fit the vibe.”
Kim was accompanied by her mother and younger sisters on the Met Gala red carpet. Kylie and Kris Jenner rocked Oscar de la Renta designs, while Kendall chose a gown from the Givenchy by Alexander McQueen archives, later changing into two white mini dresses for the after-parties.
